GreenFiber Attic Insulation: The Houston Owner’s Guide
If your GreenFiber attic insulation has settled, gotten wet, or simply isn’t holding the R-value it should, we stock GreenFiber-compatible blown-in cellulose and can typically install it same week across Houston. Most GreenFiber attic top-ups or full replacements run between $1,800 and $4,200 installed, depending on square footage and how much old material needs to come out first. You’ll get an exact written price before we touch anything, and the work itself is covered by our 365-Day Done Right Promise.
Most Houston homeowners discover their GreenFiber insulation has failed the same way: a bedroom that won’t stay cool in August, an energy bill that climbs every summer, or a drywall patch where a leak left the cellulose matted down flat. Cellulose doesn’t die loudly. It loses its loft slowly, and by the time you notice, it’s been underperforming for a while.
We’re an independent Houston insulation contractor, not affiliated with GreenFiber. We work with their material because it’s a solid product when installed correctly, and we also stock Reflectix radiant barrier for Houston attics that need it.
Which GreenFiber Models This Applies To
GreenFiber makes several blown-in cellulose products, and the compatibility question matters more than most homeowners expect. The three you’ll most likely have in a Houston attic are SANCTUARY (their standard all-boron treated cellulose), INS735 (a higher-density product often used in cathedral ceilings), and R-60 Stabilized Cellulose (designed for deep attics that need to hold loft over time). Each has a different density specification, which changes how much material per square foot you need to hit a target R-value.
The part that actually “fails” in a GreenFiber system is rarely the cellulose itself. It’s the installed depth and the air seal beneath it. Cellulose can settle 15 to 20 percent over its life, and in Houston’s humidity, it can absorb enough moisture to lose up to 40 percent of its insulating power before you see any visible damage. That’s the gotcha: your attic can look full and still be performing like it’s three inches thin.
If you’re trying to identify what’s in your attic, look for the GreenFiber bag stapled to a rafter or truss, or check for a gray, fibrous material with visible newsprint flecks. Fiberglass is pink, yellow, or white and has a different texture. If you’re unsure, send us a photo or have a technician check it. We carry GreenFiber and equivalent Aftermarket cellulose on the truck, and we’ll match the existing material rather than mixing incompatible products.
Signs Your GreenFiber Attic Insulation Is Failing
- Upstairs rooms run 8 to 12 degrees hotter than downstairs in summer. That’s the classic sign of settled cellulose in a Houston attic. The material has compressed to the point where heat is moving through the ceiling faster than your AC can strip it out.
- Energy bills climb year over year without a change in usage. Cellulose loses R-value as it settles and absorbs moisture. What was R-38 when it was installed might be performing at R-24 now, and your HVAC is working harder to compensate.
- You can see the tops of your ceiling joists. In a properly insulated Houston attic, the joists should be buried. If you can walk through and see joists sticking up, the insulation has settled below the level where it does its job.
- Damp or matted spots near the eaves, roof penetrations, or former leak areas. Wet cellulose never recovers. It mats down, loses loft permanently, and keeps holding moisture against your framing.
- Rooms that never felt comfortable, even right after the insulation was installed. New attic insulation without proper air sealing underneath performs about like old attic insulation. The air leaks at top plates, can lights, and plumbing penetrations carry more heat than the insulation ever will.
Replacement Cost & What’s Included
For a typical Houston attic between 1,200 and 1,800 square feet, a full GreenFiber-compatible blown-in installation runs $1,800 to $4,200. That includes air sealing around can lights, top plates, and plumbing penetrations, blowing the cellulose to the correct depth for R-38 to R-60, and cleaning up the job site. A top-up over existing insulation runs on the lower end; pulling out old, matted material and starting fresh runs higher.
What moves the price: whether we’re removing old material first, the attic’s accessibility, how much air sealing is needed, and the target R-value. Houston’s climate zone calls for R-38 in most attics and R-49 to R-60 if you want serious summer performance. You’ll get a written line-item price before any work begins, not an estimate that shifts at the door.
Every GreenFiber installation we do includes our 365-Day Done Right Promise: if the work doesn’t hold up within a year, we come back and fix it at no charge. And the insulation itself carries the manufacturer’s coverage for material performance.
DIY or Call Us?
You can safely check a few things yourself: whether you see bare joists, whether the material feels damp near roof penetrations, and whether there’s obvious settling around the attic perimeter. That’s all worth doing before you call anyone. But blowing cellulose correctly is not a Saturday project. The machine rental alone is a headache, and without the right density settings and air sealing underneath, you’ll pay for material that never delivers its rated R-value.
Batt installation has its place, but for a cellulose attic, blown-in is the right tool only when it’s done with proper equipment and a real understanding of Houston’s moisture profile. If you want to see what’s actually happening in your attic first, call (903) 447-8369 and we’ll send someone out to look. Estimates are free, and you’ll get a straight answer about what needs replacing and what can stay.
FAQs
GreenFiber cellulose typically performs well for 20 to 30 years in a dry, properly ventilated Houston attic, but it can degrade much faster if it gets wet or wasn’t installed to the right density. Settling of 15 to 20 percent over the first decade is normal. If your attic is 15-plus years old and you’re seeing bare joists or hot rooms, it’s time for a top-up or full replacement. Call (903) 447-8369 for an inspection.
Yes, if the existing material is dry, clean, and not matted from moisture or pest activity, we can blow GreenFiber-compatible cellulose over the top to restore the original R-value. If the material is wet, moldy, or heavily compressed, it has to come out first. We’ll tell you which situation you have before any work starts.
Most full replacements take a full day, including removing old material, air sealing, and blowing in the new GreenFiber-compatible cellulose. Larger attics or jobs requiring significant air sealing might span two days. You’ll get a committed arrival window before we start, and we leave the job site cleaner than we found it.
Yes, our Houston crews carry GreenFiber-compatible cellulose and the equipment to install it properly, so most top-up and replacement jobs can be scheduled within the same week. We also stock Reflectix radiant barrier for Houston attics that need it. If you need a specific GreenFiber product matched to your existing attic, call (903) 447-8369 and we’ll confirm what’s available.
