Rockwool Vapor Barrier Installation Nationwide

Rockwool Vapor Barrier Installation: The Houston Owner’s Guide

Rockwool vapor barrier installation in Houston typically runs $1.65 to $3.10 per square foot installed, and a standard 1,200-square-foot attic job lands between $1,980 and $3,720 depending on access and the condition of your existing insulation. We stock Rockwool-compatible vapor barrier products on our trucks, so most Houston jobs go from first phone call to finished install in two to four business days. You usually find out your vapor barrier failed when you climb into the attic for storage and notice the kraft facing on your Rockwool batts peeling away, or when a musty smell starts drifting down through the ceiling registers after a long Houston summer.

Which Rockwool Models This Applies To

Rockwool makes two product lines where vapor barrier installation matters in Houston: ComfortBatt, which is the semi-rigid batt insulation most homeowners have, and Safe’n’Sound, which shows up in interior walls more than attics. ComfortBatt comes in two facing options: unfaced and foil-faced. The unfaced version requires a separate vapor barrier in Houston’s climate, and that’s where the installation question gets real. The foil-faced version has a built-in barrier, but only if the seams get taped with Rockwool’s own foil tape, not generic duct tape, which peels off within a season in a hot Texas attic.

One compatibility gotcha we see constantly: ComfortBatt sizing changed in 2019. The older Rockwool batts measured a true 15.25 inches wide for 16-inch on-center framing. The newer ones are 15 inches exactly. If you’re patching barrier over older batts, you need the wider membrane or you’ll leave a half-inch gap along every stud bay, and Houston humidity will find that gap within a month. We match barrier width to the actual batt, not the framing, because that’s where air and moisture actually move.

On the OEM versus aftermarket question: Rockwool’s branded vapor barrier is sold under the Rockwool Vapor Retarder name in 500-square-foot rolls. Aftermarket 6-mil polyethylene from a Houston big-box store works functionally, but it tears more easily during install and doesn’t come with a perm rating printed on the roll. We stock both and recommend the Rockwool membrane when the attic has any history of moisture problems, because the printed perm rating matters if you’re trying to keep a mold warranty alive.

Woolsey Insulation Houston is an independent insulation contractor. We’re not affiliated with Rockwool, but we install their products every week and keep their current spec book on every truck.

Signs Your Rockwool Vapor Barrier Installation Is Failing

  • Sagging or drooping barrier between joists. The staples backed out because they were driven into soft roof decking rather than the joist faces. In a Houston attic that hits 140°F in August, the polyethylene stretches and pulls staples loose within a single summer.
  • Condensation beads on the attic side of the barrier. That means the barrier’s on the wrong side of the insulation, or it’s been punctured somewhere and warm house air is reaching a cool surface. Houston’s dew point sits above 70°F most of the year, so this shows up fast.
  • Kraft facing peeling off Rockwool batts. The asphalt adhesive Rockwool uses on faced batts fails when the attic stays above 120°F for weeks on end. That’s a normal Houston July. Once the facing peels, there’s no barrier at all.
  • Musty smell through ceiling registers in summer. Moisture’s been collecting in the insulation for a while. Rockwool resists water absorption better than fiberglass, but the barrier itself can trap moisture against the batts if it was installed with the perm side facing the wrong direction.
  • Visible gaps at the eaves or around ceiling penetrations. During installation, someone cut the barrier short rather than tucking and sealing around recessed light housings and plumbing vents. Any gap lets moist air up into the insulation, and the barrier fails at exactly the points it was meant to protect.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

In Houston, Rockwool vapor barrier installation costs between $1.65 and $3.10 per square foot installed. The range depends on three things: whether we’re working over existing insulation or starting fresh, how many ceiling penetrations need cutting and sealing, and whether the attic has standard 24-inch joist spacing or older 16-inch framing that requires more cuts. For a typical Houston ranch house with a 1,200-square-foot attic, you’re looking at $1,980 to $3,720 total.

Every quote includes the barrier material, all seam tape and staples, sealing around penetrations, hauling away any old failed barrier, and our written labor guarantee. We walk the attic first, take measurements, and hand you a written number before any work starts. That number doesn’t change at the door. Glenn Hartley has been straight about pricing since he first picked up a staple gun, and that’s not something we’re willing to change now.

The Kingswell Guarantee covers every vapor barrier job: the price is in writing before work begins, we show up in the committed window, we leave the attic cleaner than we found it, and if the work fails within 365 days, we come back and make it right at no charge.

DIY or Call Us?

There’s nothing dangerous about vapor barrier installation in the sense of springs or electrical work. The real risk is doing it wrong and not knowing for months, until moisture has already settled into your insulation and started growing mold you can’t see. If you want to check your current barrier, you can safely climb up with a flashlight and look for sagging, peeling, or gaps. That’s worth doing once a year in Houston.

Where DIY goes sideways is the sealing work. The barrier only works if every seam is taped, every penetration is sealed with compatible tape, and the perm rating faces the right direction. A single untaped seam in a 1,200-square-foot attic lets more than enough moisture through to cause problems. We’ve fixed dozens of homeowner-installed barriers that looked fine from the ladder and failed a blower-door test. If you’d rather have it done once and covered by a written guarantee, call us at (903) 447-8369. We’ll tell you straight whether you even need a new barrier or just some seam repairs.
